The ecumenical movement remembers Rubem Alves, 1933-2014

Rubem Alves of Brazil, one of the foundational thinkers behind Latin American “liberation theology”, died at the age of 80 on Saturday 19 July. This scholar, teacher, activist, psychotherapist and author is being commemorated by colleagues, former students, journalists and others, including heads of state.

WCC general secretary congratulates Walter Altmann on his 70th birthday

The Rev. Dr Walter Altmann, former moderator of the Central Committee of the WCC, has been congratulated on his 70th birthday in a private letter from the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit. Altmann, a Brazilian Lutheran pastor who has played a leading role in the ecumenical movement, turned 70 on Tuesday 4 February.

Voices against violence at World Youth Day in Rio

Youth representing ecumenical networks have been vocal in addressing social, economic and environmental issues at the World Youth Day, a Roman Catholic Church event, which gathered more than a million participants in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Magali Cunha joins Brazil’s National Truth Commission

Dr Magali do Nascimento Cunha, a Central Committee member of the World Council of Churches (WCC) and professor at the Methodist University of São Paulo, has joined Brazil’s National Truth Commission as a researcher. The commission will investigate human rights violations in Brazil that occurred between 1948 and 1988, including the years of military dictatorship in that country.
