WCC expresses outrage over Salha massacre in Omdurman

World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay expressed shock and outrage over the horrific massacre committed in Salha, Omdurman, on 27 April. Reports received from the area describe mass executions of unarmed civilians, arbitrary arrests under the so-called "Strange Faces Law," and the appalling treatment of human remains, with bodies piled among car tires.

Pope Francis remembered as prophet of encounter and inclusion

A pope guided by the conviction that the church is a home for all, a home with its doors always open.” That was how Pope Francis was remembered at his funeral in St Peters Square by Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the Roman Catholic Churchs college of cardinals, who led the Requiem Mass.

WCC Annual Review 2024

Pursuing Peace Together

The WCC Annual Review 2024: Pursuing Peace Together presents the Pilgrimage of Justice, Reconciliation, and Unity in progress. This pilgrimage brings active hope even amid global trends that have brought incalculable human suffering.

“We hope these pages will show the ways in which Christians and Christian churches are living their ecumenical fellowship today—the ways in which we unite our worldwide fellowship of churches not only around our shared Christian faith, which remains our vital centre, but also in the specific interests of justice, love, peace, and hope,” writes WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay in an opening message.

The annual review also shows how WCC member churches have been standing up for truth, siding with the poor, and holding out hope amid injustices and suffering.

A final version and translations will follow the currently available edition of the 2024 Annual Review in the coming weeks.
