The opening celebration of the Global Ecumenical Theological Institute (GETI) brought together around 100 young theologians including students from the Bossey Ecumenical Institute.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) International Planning Group for the Global Ecumenical Theological Institute (GETI) met on 7 June to further solidify plans for GETI 2022, which will take place in two phases—online and residential—under the theme “Christ’s Love (Re)moves Borders.”

The Ecumenical Theological Education programme of the WCC hosted the first meeting of the International Planning Group of the Global Ecumenical Theological Institute 2021 in end-January in Karlsruhe, Germany, the venue of the future 11th WCC Assembly.

“We’ve seen in the case of refugees, how the church takes a strong standpoint in welcoming those who have fled. But it isn’t always so easy in the congregations. There are many who feel fear, as we receive not only refugees but sometimes also people of other faiths. In this case, we can see a gap between what the church says, and what is actually lived.”

Starting preparations for a Global Ecumenical Theological Institute in the context of the 2018 World Mission Conference in Africa was a tangible result of a meeting of 20 ecumenical educators from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Held six months after the first consultation in São Leopoldo, Brazil, the five-day session in Halle became a vibrant meeting point and a juncture between different religious contexts from the global North and South.

Dr Dietrich Werner is the recipient of an honorary Doctorate in Divinity, awarded to him by Serampore College in India. The title was conferred in recognition of Werner’s long-term contributions to theological education, mission and ecumenism, and for building ecumenical partnerships among Christian academic institutions in Asia and advising forums on theological education in India.

Nearly one hundred representatives of the German member churches of the WCC met from 16 to 18 January at the Evangelical Academy of Loccum in order to share their experiences from the WCC 10th Assembly and to discuss how they would continue their way together on their pilgrimage of justice and peace.
