Thursdays in Black ambassadors are organizing a series of Bible studies, beginning 5 August, that will help people reflect on and respond to gender-based violence. The first series of 6 reflections is being launched to recognize National Women’s Month in South Africa, and particularly Women’s Day in the country – August 9.

On World Day Against Trafficking in Persons—30 July—the World Council of Churches and Lutheran World Federation co-hosted a joint webinar on human trafficking that put the voices of survivors first.

"If youth in Africa are united and reconcile with our past, we will be able to confront the stumbling blocks of the continent. If we are patriotic, if we have a passion for Africa, we can transform the continent to be a home and a future for all," said Collins Shava, youth executive secretary for the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), as he reflected on the Africa: My Home. My Future. campaign being undertaken by AACC to inspire young people to be patriotic to their countries and Africa at large by utilizing their talents towards building a thriving continent.

A diverse selection of 26 young people designated as stewards for the World Council of Churches (WCC) gathered online from 14-16 June 2021 to take part in an orientation of stewardship and ecumenical formation, designed to build awareness, develop leadership, and strengthen global solidarity, as well as an orientation on their participation in upcoming major WCC meetings. 

What is our role as Christians in protecting the environment? As the impact of climate change intensifies over time, children and young people are facing the consequences of our actions. This year, the World Council of Churches (WCC) is organizing an online event to observe Ecumenical International Youth Day as a space for young people to discuss climate change. 

Young people have been challenged to envisage a future for the region and work together towards building a dynamic Pacific in preparation for the upcoming WCC 11th Assembly.

 



 

An online intergenerational conversation held 1 July marked the 50th anniversary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) Interreligious Dialogue and Cooperation Programme.

A communique—signed by more than 30 religious organizations, including the World Council of Churches—entitled “People of Faith are Allies to Generation Equality” lifts up the role of religious leaders in transforming gender norms, implementing programmes, reforming unjust laws and promoting gender justice.

Across the globe, World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee members demonstrated their commitment to end sexual and gender-based violence by marking “Thursdays in Black” in their online regional meetings today.

The South Sudan Council of Churches is inviting churches to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, observed globally on 19 June. The council published a series of messages available for use in worship services over the weekend.

A group of 26 stewards from all over the world are convening online this week for their orientation into serving during the upcoming World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee meeting. 

The young people from all over the world will meet on 14-16 June for a programme that includes ecumenical formation as well as an introduction into the proceedings of the WCC central committee, which will convene 23-29 June. 

 

In a video message, moderator of the World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee Dr Agnes Abuom bid goodbye and expressed deep appreciation to Rev. Prof. Dr h.c. Cornelia Füllkrug-Weitzel, who is retiring as president of "Brot für die Welt" and "Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe" after leading the German charity for 20 years. Füllkrug-Weitzel is also a WCC Thursdays in Black ambassador.
