WCC 11th Assembly: safe and welcoming environment for all

Whether in the plenary hall, restaurant, prayer tent, or in different meeting places, delegates and participants of the World Council of Churches (WCC) 11th Assembly held from 31August to 8September in Karlsruhe, Germany would be greeted with a warm smile and the words “are you doing good?” by men and women in orange vests who formed the pastoral care and solidarity team. This was one of the ways that the assembly ensured a safe and welcoming environment.

At a workshop held at the World Council of Churches 11th Assembly, participants expressed grave concerns over the fact that, although public health experts warned about the dangers of ignoring other epidemiological efforts at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries had to reshuffle critical medical resources, thereby preventing routine treatment of HIV.

WCC expresses solidarity, urges advocacy for the human rights and self-determination of Indigenous Peoples across the world

In a public statement released by the leadership of the WCC central committee, the WCC encourages continued advocacy, “with Indigenous Peoples and on their behalf in defence of their human rights, to protect the use of human rights language, to promote Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination and the right to participate in the decision making process within churches and in society.”

L’amour du Christ déplace et supprime les frontières – Photos de l’Institut mondial de théologie œcuménique (GETI) 2022

L’Institut mondial de théologie œcuménique (GETI) 2022, qui constitue le troisième évènement de formation théologique œcuménique mondial, a réuni une centaine de jeunes théologiens et théologiennes du monde entier pendant six semaines de partage et d’apprentissage œcuméniques intenses. Il s’est déroulé en deux phases: une première phase en ligne pendant quatre semaines, puis une phase en présentiel pendant deux semaines, dans le cadre de la 11e Assemblée du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE) qui s’est déroulée à Karlsruhe, en Allemagne.

Christ’s Love (Re)moves Borders – GETI 2022 in images

GETI 2022, the third global iteration of a Global Ecumenical Theological Institute, brought together some 100 young theologians from across the globe for six weeks of intense ecumenical sharing and learning – first online for four weeks and then for two weeks in person onsite – as the World Council of Churches (WCC) recently gathered for its 11th assembly in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Promotion de la dignité humaine par l’art

La quatrième Plénière thématique de la 11e Assemblée du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE), qui s’est tenue le 6 septembre, avait pour thème «Affirmer la justice et la dignité humaine.» La présentation comprenait un spectacle de danse en fauteuil roulant exécuté par Fadi El Halabi, qui est en fauteuil roulant, et Mme Karen Abi Nader, une artiste internationale. Au cours de la danse libre, M. Halabi a tourné sans effort autour de son fauteuil roulant et, grâce à de lents mouvements coordonnés avec sa partenaire, a brandi les mains en l’air, symbolisant la joie qui ne peut être ressentie que lorsque toutes les pratiques d’exclusion et de déresponsabilisation en cours dans l’Église et la société sont combattues.

La lutte des femmes autochtones pour défendre leur identité en Asie et ailleurs

Très souvent, les contributions des femmes autochtones d’Asie à leurs sociétés et communautés passent inaperçues en raison de la marginalisation et de la discrimination dont elles sont victimes dans la région et au-delà. Si l’égalité des genres progresse lentement dans le monde, les femmes autochtones luttent toujours pour leurs droits de femmes, mais aussi de femmes autochtones; ce message est l’un des constats d’un atelier, qui s’est déroulé le 2 septembre, en marge de la 11e Assemblée du Conseil œcuménique des Églises (COE).

Promoting human dignity through art

“Affirming justice and human dignity”  was the theme of the fourth thematic plenary of the World Council of Churches(WCC) 11th assembly on 6 September. The presentation featured a wheelchair dance performance by Fadi El Halabi, a wheelchair user and Ms. Karen Abi Nader, an international artist. In the freestyle dance, Halabi effortlessly spinned around his wheelchair and,  with slow coordinated moves together with his dance partner, threw hands in the air symbolizing the joy that can only be felt when all exclusionary and disempowerment practices in church and society are addressed.

Indigenous women struggle for identity in Asia and beyond

The contributions made by indigenous women in Asia to society and community often go unnoticed and unrecognized due to continued marginalization and discrimination in the region and beyond. Participants in a September 2 workshop at the World Council of Churches (WCC) 11th assembly heard that while gender equality is slowly gaining momentum globally, indigenous women are still struggling for their rights - first as women and second as indigenous women.
