Our series of interviews with Thursdays in Black ambassadors highlights those who are playing a vital role in increasing the impact of our collective call for a world without rape and violence. Rev. Sally Azar is a pastor at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, and currently serves as a pastor in Jerusalem for both Arabic and English-speaking congregations. 

COVID-19 in conflict zones: “a crisis within another crisis”

Damaris, a Nigerian woman, described her experience of 2020: “We’ve gone through hell.”

Damaris and her sisters were kidnapped in March 2020 and threatened with death as their kidnappers demanded money. Her father had to sell everything and beg on the streets to meet their demands. “We are just a common people in Nigeria,” she said. “We don’t know what we did.”

In united protest, Jerusalem church leaders close Church of the Holy Sepulchre

In a highly unusual action, the leaders of Jerusalem’s churches closed the doors of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Sunday. The united protest was in response to moves by Jerusalem authorities to begin collecting tens of millions of dollars in taxes from churches, as well as proposed legislation to confiscate church-owned land.

Dans un acte extrêmement inhabituel, les responsables des Églises de Jérusalem ont fermé les portes de l’église du Saint-Sépulcre dimanche dernier. Cette protestation est une réaction aux nouvelles mesures prises par les autorités de Jérusalem pour collecter des dizaines de millions de dollars sous forme de taxes aux Églises, ainsi qu'à un projet de loi visant à confisquer les terres appartenant aux Églises.

A safe space for sinners to change and for pain to be shared

Church must be a safe place where sinners are welcome to learn and change, and where the wounded can share their pains and find refuge, says Maria Dous, a medical student from Egypt. In July, she participated in a seminar organized by the Pan African Women’s Ecumenical Empowerment Network at the WCC's Ecumenical Institute Bossey.

L'Église doit être un lieu sûr où les pécheurs sont encouragés à apprendre et à changer, mais aussi où les personnes meurtries peuvent partager leurs souffrances et trouver refuge, a déclaré Maria Dous, une étudiante égyptienne en médecine. En juillet dernier, elle a participé à un séminaire organisé par le Réseau œcuménique d'autonomisation de la femme panafricaine (ROAFP).
