In a highly unusual action, the leaders of Jerusalem’s churches closed the doors of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Sunday. The united protest was in response to moves by Jerusalem authorities to begin collecting tens of millions of dollars in taxes from churches, as well as proposed legislation to confiscate church-owned land.

World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit addressed the status of Jerusalem at the international "World Conference in Support of Jerusalem" on 17-18 January in Cairo, Egypt, organized by the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh al-Tayyib, under the auspices of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.

اجتمعت اللجنة التنفيذية لمجلس الكنائس العالمي في عمان، الأردن، في الفترة ما بين 17 و23 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر من أجل المصادقة على خطة وميزانية عام 2018، والاستعداد لتجديد الخطة الاستراتيجية لمجلس الكنائس العالمي. وحدّدت اللجنة التنفيذية سبل المضي قدماً في انخراط مجلس الكنائس العالمي في فلسطين وإسرائيل من خلال المزيد من الاطلاع على الوضع الخاص في الأردن والشرق الأوسط، وناقشت تحديات الكنائس وردّ مجلس الكنائس العالمي. ورحّب غبطة "ثيوفيلوس" الثالث، بطريرك المدينة المقدسة أورشليم وسائر فلسطين والأردن بهذه المجموعة.

The WCC Executive Committee met in Amman, Jordan from 17-23 November to approve the 2018 plan and budget and prepare for renewal of the WCC strategic plan. The Executive Committee also discerned the way forward for the WCC’s involvement in Palestine and Israel by learning more about the particular situation in Jordan and the Middle East, then discussing the challenges of the churches and the WCC response. The Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem, All Palestine and Jordan, Theophilos III, welcomed the group.

أدان أمين عام مجلس الكنائس العالمي سعادة الدكتور / "أولاف فيكس تفايت" الهجوم على المسجد في مصر والذي أدّى إلى قتل المئات من المصلين، وأعرب عن حزنه العميق على هذه الأرواح المفقودة وأعداد الجرحى جرّاء هذا الهجوم الذي وقع يوم 24 تشرين الثاني / نوفمبر 2017م.

WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit condemned an attack at a mosque in Egypt during which hundreds of people are believed dead. Tveit expressed sorrow for the lives lost as news continued to unfold of the attack on 24 November.

While celebrating new steps taken towards global elimination of nuclear weapons, the WCC Executive Committee also fears the cycle of confrontation on the Korean peninsula might slide into nuclear warfare.

The WCC Executive Committee, during its meeting in Amman, issued a “Statement on Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and on 2017 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.”

Together with the heads of the Coptic, Syrian, Armenian and Indian Orthodox Churches, the Evangelical Church in Germany celebrated on Saturday evening in Berlin an ecumenical prayer for Christians in the Middle East. The jointly prepared service was the highlight of a historic visit. For the first time, Pope Tawadros II, Patriarch Ignatius Afrem II, Catholicos Karekin II and Catholicos Baselios Morthoma Paulose II visited together in Germany to inform political and church representatives on the bad and sad situation in the region of origin of Christianity.

Relations between the WCC and the Centre for Interreligious Dialogue in Tehran go back more than 20 years. One recent fruit of this relationship has been the developing links between the WCC and the University of Religions and Denominations in the Iranian holy city of Qom.
