A statement from the World Council of Churches (WCC) 11th Assembly, “War in Ukraine, Peace and Justice in the European Region,” denounces “the illegal and unjustifiable” Russian invasion of Ukraine and renews the call for a ceasefire.

Ukrainian archbishop Yevstratiy of Chernihiv and Nizhyn, in a press briefing at the World Council of Churches (WCC) 11th Assembly, told journalists that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine has applied to become a full member of the WCC and the Conference of European Churches.

War in Ukraine, church dialogue, and humanitarian response were in sharp focus on third day of the World Council of Churches 11th Assembly. Church leaders from Ukraine together with heads of ecumenical organisations emphasised the need for reconciliation, unity, and peacebuilding.

Во время недавнего визита солидарности в Украину делегация Всемирного совета церквей (ВСЦ) встретилась с представителями различных государственных учреждений, занимающихся религиозными вопросами. В ходе визита делегация выслушала и пообщалась с жертвами продолжающейся войны, и обратилась с просьбой оказать поддержку в получении разрешения членам делегации украинских церквей покинуть страну, чтобы принять участие в 11-й Ассамблеи ВСЦ в Карлсруэ.

В ходе своего визита в Украину, который проходил с 1 по 5 августа, Всемирный совет церквей (ВСЦ), проводя встречи с представителями церквей и государственных учреждений, выразил солидарность своего всемирного содружества с народом Украины.

During the recent solidarity visit in Ukraine, a World Council of Churches (WCC) delegation has met with various state institutions working with religious issues, listening and learning from the victims of the ongoing war and asking for support in giving permission to the members of the delegation of Ukrainian Churches to leave the country and attend the WCC 11th Assembly in Karlsruhe. 

The World Council of Churches (WCC) expressed the solidarity of its worldwide fellowship with the people of Ukraine while meeting churches and state institutions during a visit to Ukraine from 1 – 5 August.

World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca expressed great concern in the wake of a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the northern part of Luzon Island in the Philippines on 27 July.

Осуждая незаконную и неоправданную войну, «навязанную народу и суверенному государству Украины», Центральный комитет Всемирного совета церквей (ВСЦ) выразил сожаление по поводу «ужасающего и возрастающего числа жертв, разрушений и перемещений, разорванных отношений и еще более глубоко укоренившейся враждебности между народами этого региона, усиления конфронтации  глобального масштаба, повышенного риска голода в регионах с низким уровнем продовольственной безопасности, экономических трудностей, а также повышенной социальной и политической нестабильности во многих странах».

Deploring the illegal and unjustifiable war “inflicted on the people and sovereign state of Ukraine” the World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee lamented “the awful and continuing toll of deaths, destruction and displacement, of destroyed relationships and ever more deeply entrenched antagonism between the people of the region, of escalating confrontation globally, of increased famine risk in food insecure regions of the world, of economic hardship and heightened social and political instability in many countries.”

In a public statement, the World Council of Churches executive committee reiterated the need for a ceasefire in Ukraine, and the need for addressing growing food insecurity worldwide.

On the International Day of Living Together in Peace declared by the United Nations, members of the World Council of Churches (WCC) fellowship from countries troubled by war and conflict gathered to pray for sustainable peace in the world.
