WCC to hold seminar on migration and theological education

How should the growing phenomenon of migration affect training for ministry? An upcoming seminar organized by the WCC at the Ecumenical Institute Bossey will focus on evaluating experiences and devising new approaches to theological education that can help churches understand migration as an opportunity of “being the church together”.

The ecumenical movement remembers Rubem Alves, 1933-2014

Rubem Alves of Brazil, one of the foundational thinkers behind Latin American “liberation theology”, died at the age of 80 on Saturday 19 July. This scholar, teacher, activist, psychotherapist and author is being commemorated by colleagues, former students, journalists and others, including heads of state.

Churches call for an immediate cessation of hostilities in Gaza

Expressing grave concern over the escalation of military operations in Gaza, the WCC general secretary said, “Hostilities must cease. Israel, Palestine and the surrounding region must be offered the hope of peace: a peace based in justice, a lasting peace that may lead toward reconciliation”.

WCC expresses concern over exodus of Christian community in Mosul, Iraq

In an official statement issued on 21 July, the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit expressed deep concern over the exodus of the Christian community from the Iraqi city Mosul occurring due to threats from the self-proclaimed Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Tveit called these developments a “tragedy” for both Christians and Muslims.

WCC expresses sorrow at loss of life in Malaysia Airlines disaster over Ukraine

The WCC today expressed sympathy and sorrow to family, friends and colleagues who mourn the deaths of nearly 300 passengers and crew on board Malaysia Airlines flight 17 when it crashed in eastern Ukraine on 17 July en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Particular mention was made of the estimated one-third of the victims who were travelling to the International AIDS Conference in Melbourne, due to begin on Sunday 20 July.

Leadership in Standing Committees of the WCC’s governing body

The Central Committee of the WCC has appointed new moderators of its Standing Committees. These moderators will facilitate the work of the WCC related to its programmes, policies, public issues addressed by the organization, governance, as well as communication and finances.

Church of England’s vote on women bishops

As the General Synod of the Church of England voted allowing women to serve as bishops, an issue under discussion in the church since a long time, posing challenges for its internal and external relationships, the WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit expressed his hopes and prayers “that this decision proves to be a blessing for the mission of the Church of England”.
