The World Council of Churches (WCC) expresses its profound sorrow and deep concern following the demolition of the historic Evangelical Church in Mashhad, Iran, and regarding subsequent reports of escalating pressure directed against the Evangelical Church of Iran and its institutions.
The destruction of the Evangelical Church in Mashhad constitutes the loss of an important place of Christian worship and witness, and raises serious concerns regarding the protection of religious heritage and the exercise of freedom of religion or belief. Places of worship are sacred spaces that embody the faith, history, and identity of their communities. Their destruction affects not only those who worship there but also the broader cultural and religious fabric of society.
The WCC has further received reports that, following the demolition of the church in Mashhad, increased pressure has been directed towards the Evangelical Church Synod compound in Tehran. We are particularly alarmed that church personnel have been threatened with imprisonment, that residents of the compound have been pressured to leave, and that demands have reportedly been made for the transfer of church-owned property.
The WCC calls upon the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran to immediately halt any actions that could lead to the confiscation, transfer, demolition, or repurposing of church properties, including the Evangelical Church Synod compound in Tehran. We further urge that all threats, intimidation, and legal or administrative pressures directed against church leaders, staff, residents, and members of the Evangelical community cease without delay.
The WCC urges the authorities to uphold their responsibility to protect the rights, properties, and religious heritage of all recognized religious communities in the country, in accordance with national obligations and international human rights standards.
The WCC also calls upon the international community to engage constructively and urgently in support of the protection of these church properties and the preservation of the religious freedoms and communal life of Christian communities in Iran.
The World Council of Churches stands in prayerful solidarity with the Evangelical Church of Iran and all those affected by these developments. We appeal for restraint, dialogue, and the protection of the historic institutions, places of worship, and communities that have contributed to the religious and cultural life of Iran for generations.
