This prestigious recognition is a testament not only to your spiritual leadership and enduring commitment to dialogue, reconciliation, and peace, but also to the prophetic vision you have so consistently offered the world, a vision that recognizes creation as a precious gift from God to be respected and protected, and affirms the interconnectedness of all life.

Your pioneering witness, especially in the field of ecological theology, has courageously linked environmental degradation to moral responsibility, calling attention to what you so insightfully identified as “ecological sin.” Your longstanding message that environmental harm is not simply a practical issue but a spiritual and ethical concern has inspired faith communities across traditions to re-express their relationship with creation through the lens of justice and stewardship.

We are deeply grateful for the ways in which Your All-Holiness has used your office not only to shepherd the Orthodox faithful, but to convene scientists, political leaders, and faith representatives from across the religious spectrum, bridging scientific understanding and spiritual conviction. The ecumenical imperative to care for creation that you have so eloquently championed continues to shape theological discourse and inspire collaborative efforts across confessional and religious boundaries. It serves as a call for unity in responsibility, encouraging communities of faith to transcend doctrinal divides in the shared vocation of protecting our common home and affirming life in all its dignity.

The Templeton Prize rightly recognizes this extraordinary legacy. It joins a chorus of global voices affirming your leadership, not least the recent honour bestowed by the Académie des sciences morales et politiques of the Institut de France, placing you among the most esteemed spiritual thinkers of our time.

Your All-Holiness, may God continue to bless your ministry with wisdom, strength, and peace. The World Council of Churches rejoices with you and gives thanks for the light and blessing you continue to bring to the Church and to the world.

With the assurance of my deepest respect and in the spirit of Christian fellowship, and with warm wishes for a blessed and joyful celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord,

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay

General Secretary World Council of Churches
