To the churches in Switzerland
Dear sisters and brothers,
“The Lord is near to the broken-hearted, and saves the crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18
I was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic fire during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Crans-Montana.
On behalf of the World Council of Churches, I wish to express our profound and heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of so many lives. Our hearts go out to you, and especially to the families and loved ones of those who have died, in this moment of unimaginable grief and sorrow.
No words can ease the pain of losing someone dear. Please know, however, that you are not alone. People around the world are praying for you, mourning with you, and standing with you in solidarity. May you find strength and comfort in one another, and may the memories of your loved ones become a source of light and peace in the difficult days ahead.
We hold you in our prayers as a nation mourning the dead, and we remember in particular all those who are offering care and support to the many people affected, including victims and families from different nationalities.
With deepest sympathy and Christian solidarity,
In Christ,
Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay
General Secretary
