Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ at the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK),

Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

With profound sorrow, we join you in grieving the devastating Jeju Air flight tragedy that occurred on Sunday, 29 December. The loss of 179 precious lives in this catastrophic disaster weighs heavily on the hearts of all who are part of the fellowship of the World Council of Churches.

We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families, to the Korean people, and to the churches that stand alongside them during this time of national mourning.

This tragedy comes during a year of great significance for the National Council of Churches in Korea as you commemorate a century of faithful witness and tireless advocacy for peace, justice, and human dignity. Even in this moment of profound loss, your steadfastness inspires hope and reminds us of the resilience that has carried your nation through seasons of trial and hardship.

Today, we stand with you again, this time in shared grief, united in prayer and solidarity.

We also lift up in prayer acting president Choi Sang-mok and all who are providing leadership and support during this period of national mourning. May God grant them wisdom, compassion, and strength as they navigate the immense challenges of this moment.

As the days unfold and the nation of Korea seeks healing and restoration, please know that your sisters and brothers in the WCC fellowship hold you in their hearts and prayers. We pray for the comfort of the Holy Spirit to surround the grieving, for Gods healing hand to touch the wounded, and for divine strength to sustain all who are working tirelessly to bring comfort and hope.

May Christs love comfort the Korean people, and may the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, bring strength to your hearts and minds.

In Christ,

Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay
