Greetings in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

I write to you with great sadness after receiving news of the deadly Halloween crowd crush in Itaewon, Seoul, on Saturday evening that left at least 154 dead; most of them in their 20s, and about 82 injured. This is a truly terrible tragedy.

With our deepest sympathy, on behalf of the World Council of Churches, I offer prayers to the people and churches in Korea as well as our heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost family members and friends in this disaster.

We also stand in solidarity with the people in South Korea, particularly those who are suffering from the trauma of the horror as they are going through a period of national mourning.

We pray for God’s healing grace and blessings upon the efforts of the Korean government, medical officials, and churches to assist those in need.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca
