The Right Honourable
Lord Wallace of Tankerness QC
Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland

The Most Rev. Mark Strange,
Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church

Dear Moderator, dear Primus,

I warmly congratulate the Church of Scotland and the Scottish Episcopal Church on the signing of the Saint Andrew Declaration. Considerable work has been undertaken to reach this point; this declaration shows that fundamental unity in Christ transcends any disunity over traditions of church governance. Given contemporary challenges, disunity and division in the Church are a distraction from and a hindrance to the effective proclamation of the Gospel.

This example from Scotland is an excellent and very practical example of Christian witness to the entire world, living out Jesus’ prayer for unity in John 17:21. I hope that it can provide inspiration internationally.

I send my prayerful good wishes to the Church of Scotland, the Scottish Episcopal Church and all Christians in Scotland on St Andrew’s Day, as you both commemorate your country’s patron saint and enter into a new era of ecumenical relations.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca
Acting General Secretary
World Council of Churches
