Statement on the peace talks on Sudan

The World Council of Churches (WCC) welcomes the positive developments in the ongoing talks between the warring parties in Sudan convened by the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy in Geneva. The call for a ceasefire and the encouragement of dialogue among the conflict parties represent significant steps towards alleviating the catastrophic humanitarian and protection crisis in Sudan. The WCC is heartened by this progress and hopes it will lead to meaningful and sustained peace efforts.

Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, WCC General Secretary, expressed optimism about the potential for these initiatives to bring an end to the violence and suffering. He emphasized the critical importance of maintaining open channels of communication and fostering trust among conflict parties. The WCC stands ready to support these efforts through its extensive network of churches and faith-based organizations, which can play a pivotal role in peacebuilding and reconciliation processes.

The WCC calls on all parties to seize this opportunity for peace and to prioritize the well-being of the people of Sudan. It underscores the necessity of international cooperation and adherence to humanitarian principles to ensure the protection of human rights and the delivery of essential aid. The WCC remains committed to advocating for justice, peace, and the dignity of all people, and will continue to work alongside the UN and other partners to support and sustain these positive developments

We continue to pray and work for peace, protection and provisions for all people in Sudan.
