The World Council of Churches is gravely concerned by the continued attacks by Russian forces on energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure and areas in Ukraine, including most recently a maternity unit in which a newborn baby was killed. Moreover, recurrent missile attacks close to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant risk catastrophe for people throughout the whole region.
The WCC reiterates the appeals issued by the 11th Assembly in Karlsruhe in September 2022 for respect the principles of international humanitarian law, including especially with regard to the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and urging all parties to refrain from military action in the vicinity of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Again, we join in prayer for all the victims of this tragic conflict, and of the ongoing missile attacks against civilian areas far from the battlefield. We commend all those organizations, communities and churches that are providing care and assistance to those affected by the violence. We appeal once more for an end to this deadly, destructive and unjustifiable war against the people of Ukraine.
