Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Republic of Korea,

On behalf of the World Council of Churches, I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ as you gather for the 70th General Assembly of the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK).

I’m very encouraged by the theme of the 70th General Assembly, “Walk the Path of the New Commandment.” This theme certainly resonates with the theme of the WCC’s 11th Assembly, “Christ’s love moves the world to reconciliation and unity,” serving as an invitation to the churches across the world to share in the common wisdom of love to move us all to be reconciled and to find our true unity as children of God. We are bound together by the love of Christ, and called to be disciples of his love, loving one another, and transforming the world through love.

The NCCK has been a prophetic voice for human rights and democratization, and it also has been taking an essential lead in promoting peace and reunification on the Korean Peninsula. The NCCK’s witness is an expression of the transforming love of Christ. The WCC has been privileged to accompany and support this prophetic witness.

I hope that the missional work of the NCCK will continue to bear fruit in abundance for the glory of God, peace with justice, and reunification of the divided people of Korea. I pray that the NCCK’s 70th General Assembly will renew its commitment to this essential ministry and to contribute new impulses for transformative discipleship in the life and work of churches locally and globally.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca
