Sponsored by the World Council of Churches (WCC), young theologians will engage in dialogue on the coming shape of ecumenical formation and how it can ensure a viable future for the ecumenical movement.
The meeting will be held from 7 to 10 September in Geneva, Switzerland.
The young theologians participating in the meeting previously served as tutors for the Global Ecumenical Theological Institute (GETI), a programme held at the WCC 10th Assembly in Busan, Republic of Korea, in 2013.
A joint initiative of the WCC’s ecumenical theological education programme and a network of theological institutions, in collaboration with the Korean Host Committee for the WCC assembly, the GETI programme focused on the “future of ecumenism and transformation of world Christianity in the 21st century.”
The 15 participants in the meeting will come from the United States, India, Nigeria, Argentina, Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic, South Africa and Indonesia.
Based on their experience in Busan, the participants will discuss how an initiative like GETI can continue. The outcomes of their discussions will contribute to shaping the WCC’s plans for the ecumenical theological education programme.
“To envision a vital future for ecumenism, it is extremely important to create opportunities for theological education, especially for young people,” said Dr Amélé Ekué, WCC’s programme executive for ecumenical theological education.
“Young theologians have a great potential to use ecumenical ideas effectively in their work for local churches and communities,” she said.
Participants will also visit the WCC’s Ecumenical Institute in Bossey, where they will meet with students and faculty members. Through this exposure visit, they will learn about the role of the institute in developing inter-cultural and inter-confessional understanding, an integral part of the students’ ecumenical formation.
