With an initial idea from women in the Entre Ríos District of the Evangelical Church of the Río de la Plata, the effort now involves women and youth from a broader range of church-based groups now called Notimujer.
The artistic endeavor was sparked by the late Afghan poet Nadia Anjuman’s work "I do not wish to open my mouth.”
As the women in Argentina fight for their rights and work to prevent violence against women, they were struck by how Anjuman’s poem resonates with women in Latin America.
The video features women dressed in black against a dark background who remain in silence with their faces nearly expressionless.
"We found it interesting to do so, and women who did not even belong to the group were added," explained Pastor Estela Andersen.
Beyond making visible the situation of Afghan women, the women considered it very important to also break the silence and talk about their reality, as they reflect at the end of the video.
“What they are basically trying to say is that we still have a voice and we want to say it, even if they treat us as crazy or we cannot reach official spaces or get the enthusiasm of the ministers in what we are doing," said Andersen.
