The flooding in Borno State in northeast Nigeria has destroyed thousands of homes and has worsened a dire humanitarian crisis.
Footage taken at Bishara Baptist Church Maiduguri, a WCC member church, shows muddy floodwater several feet deep that has deluged the church and all its contents.
Many other churches and government buildings are affected. Emergency responders are scrambling to rescue residents an place them in temporary shelters.
Local officials said it was the worst flooding in the state in two decades, but authorities have yet to announce deaths.
The dam collapse is compounding a humanitarian crisis in Borno over the past decade due to a conflict that has displaced 2.6 million people in the country’s northeast region.
“The immense scale and devastation of this dam collapse has alarmed and saddened us all,” said Pillay. “We are praying for Nigeria’s churches, communities, and rescue and relief agencies to alleviate the suffering to an end.”
