“The Orthodox Church has been, and continues to be, a foundational pillar of the ecumenical movement, a role that began with the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s initiative in the 1920s,” wrote Pillay. “This strong foundation of intra-Orthodox and inter-Christian collaboration is especially crucial in the face of current global challenges.”
Pillay also noted that the ongoing war in Ukraine has far-reaching consequences, affecting the entire world and, significantly, the Orthodox family.
“In this crisis, the WCC addresses inter-church relations on all levels through meetings of governing bodies, close communication with affected churches, and visits to Russia and Ukraine,” he wrote. “From the outset, the WCC has condemned this war as illegal and immoral.”
Recently, the WCC executive committee renewed its call for an end to the invasion and
occupation of Ukrainian territory, and the re-establishment of peace in Ukraine.
“We all must contribute to ending death, suffering, destruction, and environmental harm,” wrote Pillay. “Your gathering as Orthodox politicians holds immense significance in fostering a unified voice against violence and advocating for peace, particularly in the context of the Russian-Ukraine conflict, where fellow Orthodox believers find themselves in opposing factions.”
Pillay also noted that the plight of those affected by conflicts extends beyond Ukraine to regions like Gaza, where thousands have died and suffered. “The Orthodox community can play a vital role in promoting reconciliation and peace in Palestine and the broader Middle East,” Pillay wrote. “As baptized Christians, advocating for these values, you are the extended prophetic voice of the church, so that politics truly become the social dimension of love.”
