World Council of Churches (WCC) acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca sent warm greetings to Jewish communities around the world as they celebrate Rosh Hashanah and the forthcoming High Holy Days.

May these be days of renewal in joy, peace and hope,” Sauca said.

He also expressed concern over antisemitic discourse and attacks across the world.

We are deeply conscious of the continuing threat to Jewish communities posed by antisemitic discourse and attacks and repeat our call to all our member churches to oppose antisemitism as fundamentally incompatible with the Christian faith.”

Sauca also said the WCC continues to be deeply concerned about the situation in the Middle East.

During the recent surge in violence, we were grieved by the suffering and loss of life on both sides of the conflict,” Sauca said.

Throughout the last year, we have been in close contact with our principal Jewish dialogue partners in the leadership of the International Jewish Committee on Interreligious Consultations and have greatly valued the opportunity this gives for frank and respectful sharing of our perspectives, even when we disagree on significant points.”
