World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit sent a message to the participants of a public event held on 15 October, in Montevideo, Uruguay, celebrating the legacy of Emilio Castro and the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Tveit’s message expressed thanks for the life of Castro, who served for nearly 20 years as a leading member of the WCC staff, and from 1985 to 1992 as the fourth WCC general secretary.
“A leading ecumenist of the late 20th century, Emilio Castro is remembered for his unfaltering efforts in bringing together Christian faith and spirituality with radical commitment in the struggles for justice,” Tveit’s message reads. “The late Emilio Castro left an unmatched legacy of passionate ecumenism behind him.”
