World Council of Churches acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca received with joy the election of His Holiness Porfirije as Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church. “The election of Your Holiness is an encouragement for the entire Orthodox family and beyond,” wrote Sauca in a letter of congratulations. “Your work for reconciliation among Christians and your contribution to the pacification of the Balkans over the past years is a source of inspiration and builds now on the legacy of your worthy predecessor, Patriarch Irinej, who promoted a culture of peace among peoples and nations.”

Sauca reflected that our times are marked by major challenges. “We are certain that under your patriarchal ministry, the Serbian Orthodox Church will continue to strengthen the faithful contribution to the life and work of this fellowship of 350 churches,” reads the letter. “On behalf of the entire fellowship of the World Council of Churches, please accept my warmest congratulations, my wishes of many blessed years in the service of the faithful people of Serbia, and the assurance of prayers for the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ in the life of the entire Serbian Orthodox Church.”
