Pilgrim teams will stand in solidarity with indigenous communities in their struggle for justice, including water justice. The visits, hosted by the Standing Rock Episcopal Community and North Dakota Council on Indian Ministries, will follow a hybrid approach, with physical accompaniment from local participants and virtual accompaniment from international participants.
Indigenous peoples are at the frontline of the fossil fuel industry. In particular, Standing Rock has been the focal point of the Dakota Access Pipeline and its court litigation since 2016. The Pilgrim Team visits will also address the impacts of water injustice, the encroachment of sacred waters and land, and racism around Standing Rock and across North America.
With indigenous communities, the WCC Pilgrim Team will also explore responses and transformative proposals, with a focus on the role of churches and the ecumenical community.
