In a video greeting, WCC acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca offered warm greetings to the Communion of Churches in Indonesia on its 70th anniversary.

The anniversary theme is “One Body, One Burden: Be a Friend in Times of Sadness and Joy.” The celebration, which will occur online, shows the direction of the ecumenical movement in Indonesia in the form of joint action from the churches with all people of goodwill to promote and sustain life on this planet.

“Together we celebrate your joint work for unity, justice, peace and the dignity of all,” said Sauca. “When I reflect on the Communion of Churches in Indonesia and its contribution to the ecumenical movement during the last seventy years since 1950, I see its obedient discipleship in Christ and its prophetic witness for peace and non-violent action as decisive marks of your contribution.”

The Communion of Churches in Indonesia was established on 25 May 1950 as the National Council of Churches in Indonesia.

The Communion of Churches in Indonesia has constantly reminded the ecumenical movement of the preferential option for non-violence as a response to Christ’s love, said Sauca.

“Many look to you and listen to you for signs and words of truth and hope,” said Sauca. “Your prayers and faithful accompaniment have been a source of endurance for those whom others would categorise as ‘the least of these’.”

Sauca assured the communion of continued prayers from the WCC fellowship. “Indonesia needs you,” he said. "The world wide fellowship of churches also needs you.”
