In a letter to the family, WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Jerry Pillay gave thanks to God for Rycke’s life, “for her faithful service, and for the many lives she touched through her work and friendship.”
“May the memories you share bring you comfort, and may you find strength in the knowledge that her life made a meaningful difference to so many,” added Pillay.
De Rycke began working with the WCC in October 1983 as secretary for the News and Information Office. She later served as administrative assistant for the department, supporting its work for many years and becoming a trusted and valued member of the communications team.
She played a key role in the preparation and launch of Ecumenical News International in 1994, an ecumenical news agency supported by the WCC together with the Lutheran World Federation, World Alliance of Reformed Churches, and Conference of European Churches. In this role, she managed administration and contributed to the production of the news service, bringing exceptional proofreading skills and deep knowledge of the life and work of the WCC.
Colleagues remember De Rycke not only for her professionalism and reliability but also for her kindness, dedication, and quiet excellence. Through her work behind the scenes, she helped ensure the accuracy and quality of ecumenical communications.
