During the meeting, Iraqi representatives provided a comprehensive update on the progress of the national strategy for the protection of religious diversity, highlighting the governments ongoing efforts to safeguard freedom of religion and belief and to promote inclusive citizenship for all communities across the country.

WCC staff leadership, representing WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay, affirmed the WCC’s continued support for initiatives that enhance social cohesion, protect vulnerable groups, and promote peaceful coexistence. The exchange underscored the importance of sustained collaboration in advancing human rights, interfaith engagement, and shared values of dignity and equality.

During the visit, Sheikh Saddam Zamil Al-Atwani, expressed his deep appreciation for the longstanding engagement of the WCC in Iraq. He acknowledged the WCCs meaningful contributions to promoting social cohesion, protecting religious diversity, and supporting communities affected by conflict and displacement.

Sheikh Al-Atwani paid special tribute to the leadership of Carla Khijoyan, WCC programme executive for peace building in the Middle East, whose dedication and guidance have significantly strengthened the WCCs presence and impact in Iraq. He noted that her consistent advocacy, constructive dialogue with Iraqi institutions, and commitment to inclusive citizenship have played a pivotal role in advancing joint efforts for stability and mutual understanding.

The WCC was represented by Doug Chial, director of the WCC Office of the General Secretariat; Marianne Ejdersten, director of communication; Carla Khijoyan, WCC programme executive for peace building in the Middle East; Dr Manoj Kurian, director of the WCC Commission of the Churches on Health and Healing; Prof. Dr Angeliki Zidiaki, WCC programme executive for Interreligious Dialogue and Cooperation; and Mokhles Attalah, WCC finance officer.
