The gathering was part of the WCC’s ongoing commitment to accompany churches in contexts of conflict, social transformation, and peacebuilding. It followed a historic consultation convened by the WCC from 27–30 November 2023, which brought together leaders of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus, and the Ethiopian Catholic Church.
More than two years later, progress toward stronger cooperation had been slower than anticipated. Although important steps were taken, obstacles remained in fully realizing the agreed outcomes. However, recent leadership changes within the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church—including the appointment of a new general secretary and a new manager of the Holy Synod—presented a fresh opportunity to renew engagement and reaffirm the 2023 commitments.
Recognizing both the challenges and the emerging opportunities, the July 2026 meeting reviewed progress, identified obstacles, and renewed the churches’ collective resolve to work together in service to the people of Ethiopia.
Speaking at the conclusion of the meeting, Rev. Dr Kenneth Mtata, Director of the WCC Life, Justice and Peace program, said: "This is an important investment by the WCC. The unity of the church in practical areas of cooperation can strengthen their witness in national cohesion. United churches are better agents for social transformation."
