In a letter to His Holiness Abune Basilios I, Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church and to leaders of the church, WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay expressed profound sorrow upon learning that Demetros had fallen asleep in the Lord.
“On behalf of the World Council of Churches and personally, I extend my deepest condolences to Your Holiness, the leadership, clergy, faithful, and the bereaved family of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church,” wrote Pillay.
“We give thanks to Almighty God for the life and faithful service of His Excellency Ambassador Yoftahe Demetros, a devoted diplomat and faithful servant of the church, who dedicated more than 12 years of distinguished service to the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church.”
Pillay reflected on Demetros’ wisdom, dedication, humility, and commitment to the service of the church.
“In this time of sorrow, we join you in prayer and Christian fellowship, trusting in the promise of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Resurrection and the Life,” wrote Pillay. “May the Lord grant rest to the soul of His departed servant in the bosom of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in the place of light, refreshment, and peace, where there is no sorrow, mourning, or pain.”
