“It is a real joy and delight to be with you today at this General Assembly,” he said. “Indeed, for me, as you know, it is coming back home—and it is good to be home.”

Pillay last attended the Uniting Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa General Assembly in 2019.

“I was so pleased to be among those involved in leading that process,” he said. “It took a long time to get there and I hope and pray that we are doing our utmost to keep it going well.”

He brought greetings from the World Council of Churches and its 356 member churches across the globe.

“The WCC speaks of a Pilgrimage of Justice, Reconciliation, and Unity,” Pillay said. “Last week, our central committee met in Johannesburg, where this program was further entrenched and deepened with the many decisions we made.”
