The shooting occurred in Tumbler Ridge, a remote community in northeastern British Columbia, at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School as well as at a local residence. Police reported that the suspect died of a self-inflicted injury.

WCC general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay expressed solidarity with the people of Tumbler Ridge, especially with those who lost loved ones in the attack, and those who will live with the trauma and face a long-term spiritual and psychological recovery.

“As we stand with the Tumbler Ridge community and churches in their grief and trauma, we pray with you that God’s love will be a source of strength and healing,” Pillay said. “Violence against anyone—including innocent children, teachers, and parents—as they gathered to learn and grow—saddens us all.”
