The day before the 2018 North Korea–United States summit - the first between a sitting US President and the leader of North Korea - the World Council of Churches (WCC) expressed hope for a successful outcome.

The summit is scheduled to take place in Singapore on 12 June.

“We are praying that from this summit something new will emerge to transform the long and tragic history of colonial oppression, conflict, confrontation and division that has afflicted the Korean people,” said WCC general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit. “We pray that this meeting will help create new possibilities for peaceful coexistence, for justice and for reunification.”

He added: “We pray that God – the God of life, who makes all things new - will guide the hearts and minds of the political leaders towards new paths to peace and justice.”
