“Reports of violence, including the deaths of civilians and widespread injuries during protests, are alarming and deeply troubling,” he said. “We condemn the loss of life, the repression of peaceful demonstrations, and any actions that undermine justice and democratic processes.”
Pillay called upon the government of Mozambique to respect the constitutional rights of its citizens, including the right to peaceful assembly and free expression.
“We urge all stakeholders, including the ruling party and opposition leaders, to commit to constructive dialogue and refrain from actions that incite violence,” said Pillay. “Political grievances must be resolved through transparent and legal mechanisms to uphold the dignity and unity of the nation.”
Pillay concluded by reiterating that the WCC stands in solidarity with the people of Mozambique and prays for a swift resolution to the crisis. “We encourage churches in Mozambique and the broader Christian community to continue to play a prophetic role in advocating for peace, justice, and reconciliation during these challenging times,” he said. “May the God of peace and justice guide all efforts to restore harmony and build a nation rooted in equity and democratic principles.”
