The World Council of Churches Ecumenical Water Network sent a letter of appreciation on 31 October to Prof. Leo Heller as he completed his term as the UN special rapporteur for the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation.

“We as a faith community have always believed that water is a ‘gift of God’ and a common good and therefore must not be privatised,” reads the letter. “That is why we have become a ‘blue community,’” referring to the Blue Communities Project through which organizations adopt a water framework that treats water as belonging to no one and as the responsibility of all.

The letter particularly thanks Heller for his recent report on the privatisation of water. “We would like to place on record our deepest appreciation for addressing this important issue which unfortunately was not dealt with so far with such seriousness from your mandate,” reads the letter.
