In a letter to Bishop Dr Munib A. Younan of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL), the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit conveyed congratulations on behalf of the World Council of Churches (WCC) for his recent election as president of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF).

In the letter Tveit says, "your leadership, experience and ecumenical commitment means the relationship between the WCC and LWF will only grow stronger in the future to the benefit of the entire ecumenical movement and to the glory of God."

Tveit said the WCC looks forward to the "continued and growing partnership" between the WCC and Lutherans around the world.

Younan, 59, who is a Palestinian Christian, was elected president of the LWF at the recently completed Eleventh Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation held in Stuttgart, Germany.  He succeeds Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, who has been president of the LWF since the organization’s last Assembly in Winnipeg, Canada, in 2003.
