It is a joy to hear of your appointment as executive director of UN Women,” wrote Sauca. We note with pleasure, that your selection represents the UNs commitment to peace in the Middle East, a commitment which the WCC wholly endorses.”

Sauca commended Bahouss  dedication and advocacy for the empowerment of women and girls. Through the Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women and the subsequent establishment of the Thursdays in Black campaign, the WCC, our member churches and our ecumenical partners, remain committed to the cause for gender equality and justice,” he wrote. This of course, extends to ending sexual and gender-based violence in all forms.”

Sauca added that the WCC looks forward to an ever-deepening partnership and engagement with UN Women.

The UN Security Council Resolution 1325 speaks to the role of women in charting their own course for peacebuilding, an area where the women in the Middle East communities of faith have been activists and advocates in combatting violence and abuse of women in conflict situations,” Sauca wrote. Unfortunately, we are aware that violence against women is not restricted to the Middle East, and we continue to work ardently to eradicate violence against women and girls throughout the world.”
