The WCC governing body also approved the direction of the communication plan for the Ecumenical Decade on Climate Justice Action, and recommended that a consultation be held with local churches to discuss the decade, its relevance, lessons learnt from previous decades, and how they would respond to such a long-term commitment.

The WCC central committee recommended that a solidarity visit be made by the general secretary to the Marshall Islands as an urgent priority.

Related to the use of AI in WCC communication, the WCC central committee approved the paper Use of AI in WCC Communications” as a guide and starting point for implementing and monitoring the work of WCC communications until the next assembly, with a mid-term evaluation in 2027 to review progress.

The WCC governing body also recommended that consideration be given to further theological reflection on the nature of AI, its environmental impact, and the ethical implications of its use.

As the WCC central committee received a report on progress related to the WCC Communications Strategy 2023-2030, the governing body recommended that the impact of online social network services should be analysed in relation to the size of the budget allocation and comparable organisations.

The governing body also recommended that each WCC member church be invited to submit a short video, to be presented by young people from the church, highlighting their churchs life, mission, or unique witness.

Finally, the WCC central committee recommended that, as a guiding principle, four weeks’ notice be given to local churches for WCC events.

The WCC central committee is convening 18-24 June in Johannesburg, South Africa.
