“The resurgence of fighting is creating renewed fear and uncertainty among communities and risks deepening an already serious humanitarian situation,” he said. “The WCC recalls the historic Pretoria Agreement of November 2022, which brought an end to the devastating conflict and gave the people of Ethiopia renewed hope for peace.”
Pillay urged all parties to uphold the spirit and commitments of the agreement and to refrain from further military escalation.
“The WCC calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities, maximum restraint, and the resumption of direct dialogue and negotiations,” he said. “The protection of civilians and unhindered humanitarian access must remain the highest priority.”
The people of Ethiopia, who have suffered so much, deserve peace and security, Pillay added.
“As a global fellowship of churches, the WCC reaffirms its solidarity with the churches and people of Ethiopia,” he concluded. “We remain committed to accompanying them in their journey towards justice, peace, reconciliation, healing, and unity, and we pray for a peaceful resolution to the present crisis.”
