The World Council of Churches (WCC) and the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) are calling upon young Africans to participate in an essay contest for the African regional publication on Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace. Africans from the continent and the diaspora up to 35 years of age are invited to send their texts by 15 October 2019.
The Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace is a call from the 10thAssembly of the WCC, held in 2013, to churches everywhere to walk together, to view their common life, their journey of faith, and to join together with others in celebrating life and in concrete steps toward transforming injustices and violence. The basic motif of the pilgrimage is accompanied by three dimensions: celebrating life together, visiting the wounds and engaging in transformative action.
The essays should reflect the author’s church traditions, contexts and perspectives in relation to any of the four closely interrelated themes of the pilgrimage: truth and trauma (peacebuilding); land and displacement (economic justice, ecological justice and migration); gender justice and racial justice (human dignity). The essay should be about 5,000 words long, including notes and bibliography. Essay submissions will be reviewed by African staff of the WCC and the AACC.
Up to twelve papers will be published in “The Africa We Pray for on a Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace” (provisional title), the Africa regional publication on the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace, and it will form part of the pilgrimage’s regional harvests to be displayed at the WCC 11thAssembly, in 2021 in Karlsruhe, Germany.
In addition, authors of four selected submissions will be invited to participate in ecumenical conversations addressing the four themes at the WCC 11th assembly.
Essays can be written in any of the following languages: English, French and Portuguese.

- Invitations sent out in July 2019
- Deadline for notification of intention to submit an essay: 30 August 2019
- Essay submission deadline: 15 October 2019
- Announcement of winners – 12 selected essays and 4 participants to the WCC assembly: 30 October 2019
- Deadline for sending the manuscript to the publishers: 30 November 2019
- Book publication: March 2020
