Patriarch Irinej of Serbia has addressed the United Nations (UN) in New York at its High Level Forum on the Culture of Peace, an event held Friday 6 September.

Patriarch Irinej is the leader of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which has been a member of the World Council of Churches since 1965.

The patriarch, along with Sayyid Syeed of the Islamic Society of North America and Rabbi Elie Abadi of New York City, spoke on the role of religion in the establishment of peace and justice.

Calling on people and nations to “commit ourselves in the name of respect for the principle of equality and justness in international relations”, Patriarch Irinej insisted that the “durability of peace is inseparable from its justness.”

The patriarch appeared by invitation of the newly elected president of the UN General Assembly, Vuk Jeremić.
