The Benin seminar, which introduced participants to Thursdays in Black, was organized by the Methodist Church of Benin, Methodist Women's Union for the Calavi-Lac region, and other organizations.
In a final declaration entitled "Methodist Women Confronting Sexual and Gender-Based Violence,” participants reflected on the realities of sexual and gender-based violence affecting families, churches, and communities.
“We affirm that every human being, created in the image of God, possesses a sacred dignity that must be respected and protected,” reads the declaration. “We firmly condemn all forms of sexual and gender-based violence, regardless of the circumstances, perpetrators, or victims.”
The declaration acknowledges the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual suffering caused by such violence and expresses solidarity with all victims.
“We commit to promoting a culture of respect, justice, equality, and the protection of vulnerable persons within our families, churches, and communities,” reads the declaration. “We commit to raising awareness among women, men, youth, and children regarding the consequences of sexual and gender-based violence and the means to prevent it.”
The event featured presentations, interactive discussions, group work, and experience-sharing sessions focused on the challenges and issues related to gender-based violence.
“The strong participation and keen interest shown by the attendees highlight the importance of continuing awareness-raising and support initiatives within our communities,” said Rev. Evangeline Kpon Jesu Hounmenou, pastor of the Protestant Methodist Church of Benin and chaplain of the Methodist Women's Union for the Calavi-Lac region.
“This day has further strengthened our commitment to our mission and reinforced our determination to work tirelessly toward the prevention of gender-based violence, the promotion of women's rights, and the creation of an environment where respect, dignity, and equality prevail.”
More than ever, Hounmenou added, her communities remain mobilized and committed to making the fight against gender-based violence a priority and a daily responsibility.
“Together, let us continue to take action for a future free from violence,” she said.
