Throughout the conference days and eight seminars, a range of justice-related issues, including climate, racism, land, food, mental health, freedom of religion, women in peace-building, and health—including HIV and malaria—were explored in the light of the Kairos Document and strategic nonviolence.

In the closing session, participants gave feedback in using interactive electronic tools, sharing their responses in real-time on-screen. They emphasized appreciation for the spaces that were created for lament, social analysis, and creative reflection on the church’s role in justice and peace.

Participants highlighted the need to move beyond reflection to real action. Commitments included developing advocacy plans, engaging regionally, applying theology in practice, conducting local trainings, and implementing initiatives at country level. Emphasis was placed on specific, achievable goals tailored to local contexts—steps that can be taken immediately, such as hosting Sunday services, community discussions, and youth engagement.

As the conference closed, participants affirmed this as a Kairos moment—a time for the church’s prophetic witness to become a living reality, through specific steps, sustained collaboration, and unwavering hope.

Pastor Thandanani Savhasa, executive member of the South African Council of Churches, a cohost of the conference, expressed gratitude for the church’s rising prophetic voice and the engagement of all participants. “We are called to represent the unseen and marginalized, drawing on intergenerational wisdom and compassionate, strategic action,” she said, invoking the biblical call for justice and righteousness from Amos and the words of Walter Brueggemann:

“The prophetic tasks of the church are to tell the truth in a society that lives in illusion, grieve in a society that practices denial, and express hope in a society that lives in despair.”
