As the Worship Assembly Planning Committee had its first meeting in Baden, Germany from 5-11 July, prayer was at the forefront for becoming the heartbeat of the World Council of Churches (WCC) 11th assembly in Karlsruhe in September 2021.

Members of the committee discussed the framework for inter-confessional prayer before going into deeper exploration of the assembly theme, “Christ’s Love Moves the World to Reconciliation and Unity.”

Suggestions were made for the daily structure of spiritual life at the assembly, as well as elements for the opening and closing services, and the daily common morning prayer.

Musicians met separately to start planning the writing and gathering of assembly music. Suggestions were made for the size and layout of an assembly worship resource book. Central to the discussion was the choosing of biblical texts to guide the spiritual focus of each day.

The committee also got the chance to visit the location site of the assembly in Karlsruhe, where they met with city officials as well as representatives from host churches. During the final evening, members of the local host committee joined the members of the Worship Assembly Planning Committee for their final evening prayer. That afforded the opportunity for expressions of gratitude on all sides and the exchange of gifts.
