Pope Francis was presented two publications of the World Council of Churches (WCC) on 24 February, at the close of a papal audience in the Vatican attended by members of the WCC’s Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME).

Commission moderator Metropolitan Geevarghese Mor Coorilos gave the pope a copy of the most recent issue of the WCC journal International Review of Mission (IRM vol.104.2), on the theme “Evangelii Gaudium and Ecumenism.”

Evangelii Gaudium, or “The Joy of the Gospel,” is an apostolic exhortation on Christian evangelization published by Pope Francis in 2013. Articles in IRM discuss the significance of this papal document in the context of cooperation among Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Evangelicals and Pentecostals.

CWME director Rev. Dr Jooseop Keum gave Pope Francis the new mission statement, Together towards Life:  Mission and Evangelism in Changing Landscapes (WCC Publications, 2014).

Keum reports that the pope showed particular interest in the journal’s discussion of his exhortation, reviewing the list of authors and expressing his appreciation to the commission.
