“We pray for the Lebanese people as they continue the struggle to overcome the consequences and determine the causes of this terrible disaster”, said Prof. Dr Isabel Apawo Phiri, WCC deputy general secretary.

Churches are accompanying the victims in solidarity, as they remember the evening of 4 August 2020 when hundreds of metric tons of ammonium nitrate ignited, sparking a massive blast in the city's port.

The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), in a special commemorative issue of Al Muntada” magazine, is remembering the victims and the people affected, and is calling for prayers for them and for all of Lebanon.

In a meeting online on 3 August, MECC addressed the tragedy of the Beirut port explosion, noting that a year after the disaster still no outcome has been reached to determine responsibilities and achieve justice.

The council prayed that Lebanon might return to its days of stability and prosperity, and that its citizens might resume normal lives of dignity.

MECC also prepared an online publication that compiles reports covering major events that transpired throughout this year. The publication is designed to shed light on the tragedy in terms of the damage, humanitarian impact, international response, and the investigation related to the blast.
