“The truth we are all sharing with the world is a living truth coming out of the life of people, it is not a dead dogma”, said Prof. Dr Dimitra Koukoura, from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, during a panel held at the Conference on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME).

“Our task is to be in a dialogue with open societies to re-evangelize them - and offer through the gospel - true existential meaning in their lives”, added Koukoura.

The plenary on evangelism was the highlight of the second day of the CWME, being held in Arusha, Tanzania, 8-13 March. It brought together personal testimonies and insights from six speakers coming from China, United States of America, Argentina, Democratic Republic of Congo, the Cook Islands and Greece.

Facilitated by Jennifer Martin, from Jamaica, and Rev. Dr Peter Cruchley, from Singapore, the plenary explored the theme of evangelism as a fundamental aspect of discipleship.

Isis Kangudie Mana, from the Centre Oecumenique of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, shared a moving testimony about the situation in her country, where “it’s been difficult to have faith and hope in a context marked by systemic violence and extreme poverty”, she said.

“Sometimes we go to church and the pastors are not able to deliver a message of hope”, added Mana. “But faith prevails. And I pray to make a difference on behalf of my generation, that is currently so hurt and hopeless”, she said.

Over a thousand participants are gathered in Arusha for the CWME, which goes on until 13 March with a programme that includes Bible study sessions, workshops, exposure visits and thematic plenaries.
