The focus in this letter is on both inner peace and the peace of society. In this letter the bishops explore the many dimensions of peace: what does it mean for individuals, communities and nations? How is it born, and how can it be sustained?
The letter encourages each of us to work for peace wherever we find ourselves – and to be an instrument of God’s peace in this world. The bishops also share their own experiences of peace and how it is built. Finally, the reader is introduced to a way of praying for peace that will serve as a resource in our daily work for peace.
“Peace is a state to be pursued and a way of life that flows from the heart of the individual into communities, and ultimately into the entire world,” reads the introduction. “In this bishops’ letter we examine the meaning of peace and its challenges and opportunities.”
Peace does not happen by itself, notes the introduction. “It demands understanding, and a desire and continuous work for it,” reads the text. “In this letter the bishops explore the many dimensions of peace: what does it mean for individuals, communities and nations?”
Ultimately, the text is designed to encourage us to be an instrument of God’s peace in this world. “The bishops also share their own experiences of peace and how it is built,” explains the text.
