On 6 November, Rev. Samson Olasupo A. Ayokunle, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria and Nigerian Baptist Convention, offered a morning prayer about “Empowering Our Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace through Love" during the World Council of Churches (WCC) Executive Committee meeting in Uppsala, Sweden.

Love for all and, in particular, for one another in the household of faith is not an option, reflected Ayokunle. Instead, it is mandatory.

“Love in practical terms should be our distinguishing feature as children of God,” said Ayokunle. “Refusal to love others is tantamount to breaking the commands of Christ and it is a sin.”

Perfect love has no string attached, continued Ayokunle. “It is not based on the worth of the person being loved, but on the commitment of the person who has decided to love.”

Our love for one another in the Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace must not be based on race, church denomination, geographical region, age or sex, Ayokunle concluded.

“It must be unconditional love as Jesus loves us,” Ayokunle said. “This love would bring mutual respect and fairness in the scheme of things which eventually would multiply the joy and fulfillment of every member.”
